A fully redesigned Atlas is on the way to Maple Ridge Volkswagen, and the changes touch nearly every part of the vehicle. Volkswagen Canada pulled the cover off the second-generation 2027 Atlas on March 31, 2026 in New York, ahead of the international auto show. What stands out most is how the SUV has been reworked from the ground up -- fresh exterior surfaces, a completely redesigned cabin, an updated turbocharged powertrain, and a longer list of standard family features. Buyers in Pitt Meadows and across the Lower Mainland who depend on a roomy three-row SUV for school runs, weekend trips up the Sea-to-Sky, or shuttling gear to youth sports will recognize the practical strengths of the original Atlas, now packaged with sharper styling and broader technology. Final Canadian specifications and pricing will be confirmed by Volkswagen ahead of the model's launch later in 2026.
The front end has been reworked with double-stacked LED headlights flanking a masked upper grille, paired with a stronger hood line for a confident, planted appearance. Trims above the base level receive double lightlines and an illuminated VW badge as standard, helping the SUV stand out at night. Standard dynamic turn signals offer three different animation patterns, a subtle premium touch that owners notice every time they signal a lane change on Lougheed Highway.
Down the sides, sculpted sills, prominent fenders, and a sharper character line stretch the SUV's stance. Wheel choices range from 18-inch alloys up to 21-inch options, with both machined alloy and gloss black finishes available. Around back, the spoiler is more pronounced and the tailgate now sits flush with the rear bumper for a cleaner profile. A cross-body taillight signature ties the rear to the front lighting design. Available illuminated door handles and puddle lamps with a unique projection pattern round out the exterior. Three additions to the colour palette this year include Blackberry, Boreal Green, and Ascot Grey.
Step inside and the change is immediate. A continuous architectural loop wraps from the dashboard through the door panels, organizing vents, lighting, and displays along one cohesive line. Real wood décor is included on every trim, supported by soft-touch surfaces, contrasting colours, and detailed stitching. The shift lever has moved up to the steering column, opening up the centre console for storage, charging, and the new Driver Experience Dial. Three interior colour palettes -- light Mistral, classic Soul Black, and the all-new Garnet Red -- give buyers room to personalize the cabin.
Comfort improvements run throughout the cabin. The driver's 12-way ergonomic seat has been revised with stronger four-way lumbar support and is standard on every model. Move up the lineup and thigh support is added, with four-way massage available on both front seats. The top two trims continue to offer captain's chairs and a panoramic sunroof. The hallmark third-row easy-access function is unchanged, allowing the second-row seats to tilt and slide forward even with LATCH child seats secured. New B-pillar vents help cool the rear cabin, and second-row seat ventilation is available for warmer Fraser Valley summers.
Underneath the hood is the new EA888 evo5 turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder, rated at 282 horsepower. That figure is up 13 hp over the outgoing engine and is the strongest output ever fitted to a production Atlas. Volkswagen anticipates better fuel economy than the previous generation, with finalized L/100 km ratings to be released closer to the launch. Towing capacity stays at 5,000 lbs (2,268 kg), and payload capacity is unchanged from the current Atlas.
The transmission remains an eight-speed automatic, and 4MOTION all-wheel drive is standard on every Atlas without exception. That last point matters in Pitt Meadows, where wet roads, mountain getaways, and unpredictable Coast Mountain weather make all-wheel drive a sensible choice. The 2027 model rides on the upgraded MQB evo platform, which retains the spacious third-row layout while supporting the new powertrain and updated equipment. Overall length is slightly increased over the outgoing Atlas, while height, width, and wheelbase remain the same.
The infotainment system steps up to a free-standing 15-inch display on every trim except the base, which uses a 12.9-inch screen. Every model includes the 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro configurable instrument cluster. A new Driver Experience Dial sits in the centre console, controlling audio volume, drive modes, and -- on upper trims -- the Atmospheres feature that synchronizes lighting and audio. The console fits two phones side by side using updated Qi2 wireless charging, and up to seven USB-C ports are placed throughout the cabin. Audio runs from a standard 9-speaker system on the base trim to an available 14-speaker Harman Kardon premium system on the top two trims.
Safety has been strengthened with a new front centre airbag that brings total airbag count to seven. The IQ.DRIVE driver assistance suite has been refined as well. Travel Assist now supports driver-initiated lane changes from 0 to 150 km/h while the driver keeps hands on the wheel. Front and rear Park Distance Control is now standard on every trim, including the base model. The latest Park Assist Plus joins the top trim, giving drivers more confidence in tight parking situations around Pitt Meadows shopping areas.
The 2027 Atlas continues with multiple Canadian trims, all sharing the EA888 evo5 turbocharged engine, eight-speed automatic, and standard 4MOTION all-wheel drive.
Volkswagen has confirmed that pricing details will be released ahead of the launch later this year. Until then, official Canadian MSRP figures are not available. Get in touch with Maple Ridge Volkswagen to be notified when pricing is published, or to ask about reservation timelines once they open.
