Beneath the hood, the 2025 Volkswagen Taos continues with its familiar 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, but refinements to its components give it a stronger, smoother character. Output rises from 158 horsepower to 174 horsepower, thanks to a series of mechanical upgrades that include improved fuel injectors, revised piston rings, a larger intercooler, and the addition of a gasoline particulate filter for reduced emissions and cleaner performance. These changes don't just enhance output--they improve drivability, throttle response, and real-world efficiency across a variety of driving scenarios.
All Canadian Taos models come with 4MOTION® all-wheel drive, paired with a new conventional 8-speed automatic transmission. This replaces the previous dual-clutch automatic that, while quick, lacked smoothness in stop-and-go traffic. The switch results in improved refinement during acceleration and better compatibility with Canadian road conditions, including snow, ice, and uneven rural surfaces. The system includes a Driving Profile Selection feature on mid- and upper-level trims, allowing drivers to choose between modes like Eco, Normal, Sport, and Snow. Estimated fuel economy remains strong at 8.3 L/100 km in the city and 6.4 L/100 km on the highway, ensuring the Taos remains one of the most efficient AWD options in its class.
