2022 Golf R

What’s new for the Golf R

The Golf R makes a comeback in 2022 after being absent since the 2019 model year. Its revival comes after the debut of the eighth-generation Golf GTI. VW intends to discontinue sales of the ordinary Golf hatchback and station waggon in this country, leaving just the GTI and the R models available here. Fortunately, both of them are our favourites.

What’s under the hood?

Under the Golf R’s hood is a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 315 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. That’s up from 288 hp and 280 lbs-ft in the previous generation R. The engine mates with either a six- or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The standard AWD system includes a rear differential that can distribute torque between the left/right rear wheels for better handling. The Golf R’s selectable drive modes (comfort, sport, race, special, drift, individual) can be accessed via an “R” button on the steering wheel, and they allow drivers to adjust throttle response, shift points, and stability control settings. We tested the hatch’s Drift mode, which proved enjoyable on slippery surfaces, but it doesn’t replace a rear-drive sports coupe’s fun factor. Every model comes with sport exhaust, variable ratio steering, and larger front brakes than before. It rides on a set of 18-inch wheels shod in summer performance rubber.

How does it compare?

The hottest hatchbacks that have been dominating headlines while the 2022 Volkswagen Golf R has been absent are about to be dethroned. Even while Volkswagen’s newest and best high-performance hatchback isn’t as flashy as rivals like the Honda Civic Type R and Hyundai Veloster N, its more upscale appearance should help it surprise its rivals and draw in customers looking for a quick compact car with understated style. Additionally, a variety of unique features and subtle design cues help to distinguish it from the GTI.
